Question:
Any advantage to the old school skateboard decks?

Its very rare that I ever see anyone skating an old school style skateboard anymore. I'm wondering if there are any actual advantages to them? I know people say they are huge and heavy, but I wonder if that huge and heaviness could possibly be a good thing for me. See, I'm 6 foot tall, and 215 pounds (all muscle), with size 13 feet. Even my 8 inch deck seems small at times. Even after like 8 years of skateboarding, I still simply suck at anything technical like kickflips, and other board flips, and even my ollies suck, and am much more fascinated with carving, mini half pipes, vurt ramps, old school tricks like hand plants, boneless, etc. Perhaps its just lack of talent, but after 8 years of skating I'm starting to become curious if perhaps a bigger guy like me would be even better on an old school board. Sure they are big and heavy, but for a big heavy guy like me perhaps wouldn't it be possible that I would be better on a bigger heavier board?

I mean, its just a theory, but I'm thinking the same way its easier to hit a target with a heavy baseball, than a nerf ball. Or same way it would be easier to balance a large stick on your hand than a tiny twig. I'm thinking that doing kickflips, or airs on vurt ramp, or other tricks could potentially be more forgiving and easier to learn on a bigger heavier board, that you have to push around with authority, rather than these light popsicle stick boards that have to be flicked oh so perfect, too perfect for my big heavy clumsy feet to get the hang of. But that's just a theory, thats why I'm asking you guys (guys who have rode old school decks), if there are any advantages to them, especially for bigger guys.

Hey man i was exactly in the same position as you im about 6ft 73kg and size 12 feet and I used to ride a 8" zero board i could do a few trick here and there but i didn't find it fun. What I liked is just to cruz around the park and grind real fast and catch some air.

Now I have an 9.6" G&S Chris Miller old school fish board and yes it is so much easier for big guys like us. And its much more comfortable to do trick as you have lots more board width for bigger feet. You don't really notice the weight of the board to be honest but i would definitely recommend it

And iv been riding old school for about 2year and i ain't change-in back :)

Nah, man. The old school shapes were good back in the day, but look how far skating's come. It's all due to innovation in shape and product.

Just bending up the nose opened a whole new world to skating. Thinning out the width allows for way more tech sh!t to be done.

You can still be a big dude and rock a regular deck. Anything around 8 or 8.5 will do fine. Maybe check out companies like Blind that guarantee their boards, or Element with all the tech-advanced crap they claim.

Most fools have gone back to riding them, and cruiser boards, for style only.
