What is the difference between canvas and sport shoe?

Besides from that which is obvious.
I mean can I use Canvas in place of Sports shoe to play basketball?

It is the soles that determine if the shoes can be used on a court, not the uppers which makes the difference between canvas shoes and leather or nylon shoes.

If the shoes work then it doesn't matter if they are canvas.
