The line behind which the throwing player must stand is 7 ft 9ΒΌ in (2.37 m) from the face of the board, though a few British pubs set it at 8 ft (2.44 m) or 8 ft 6 in (2.59 m).

There is great variation in OCHE distance. Various positions of the OCHE are:-
1. Beeston (Nottm) 6ft
2. North Leics Darts League 7ft
3. Leicester Metropolitan League 7ft 6ins
4. Superleague 7ft 91/4ins
Historically, oches were set dependant on pub space and often varied in the same village/ town /area . It was the setting up of local leagues that determined the usual throw for an area, as teams began to visit each other and a standard set of rules had to be agreed. The countrywide 'standards' for darts came with the introduction of larger organisations.
1. The original News of the World darts competition was played at 8ft.
2. The Darts Association of Great Britain (NDAGB) set their throw at 7ft 6ins until they were superceded by the BDO.
3. The 7ft 91/4in throw was introduced in the late 1970's by the BDO.
