I've got an irreplaceable self made knife that is just starting to rust. I use some kind of anti-rust/cleaning oil and I've tried to brush off the rust as best i could without damaging it. I still want to use the knife but i want to preserve it as best i can without spending too much money on it. I just got the idea to put rice in the quiver to keep it dry in order to prevent further rusting. is it a good idea and does anyone have any other good tricks to hunting/whittle knife maintenance?

Putting a desiccant like rice in the sheath would only have a temporary effect, and even then not a profound one. It would soak up moisture until it was full (which wouldn't take long) and from then on it would simply be holding that moisture next to your blade.

For hundreds of years people have been using non-stainless knives that will rust without issue. One puts a light coat of oil on the knife before putting it in its sheath (not quiver). Each time the knife is used, or if not possible just each day of use, another light coat of oil would be put on it. That is how it was done then, and that is how it is still done now, as many of the non-stainless steels are still considered superior knife steels and used often.

Did you know a sheath is something a knife goes in, and a quiver is something arrows go in. Did you also know that a proper use of any gun oil, or light machine oil has been preventing rust for hundreds of years without the use of rice.......

Just oil your metal implements properly after every use. A light coat of an actual GUN OIL (e.g. not WD-40) will protect your knife just fine, and no, oil does not "dry out" if it's a good quality oil.

Storing it in the sheath contributes to rusting.
