Taekwondo is a traditional Korean martial art, which means "the way of kicking and striking" Most likely developed from other Asian martial arts combines with traditional Korean techniques of kickboxing. Various forms of Korean of martial arts have existed but in the early 20th century , taekwondo became the dominant form. In 1955, a group of Korean martial arts leaders chose taekwondo as the definitive Korean martial art in an attempt to promote its development internationally.
-In 2000 was officially an Olympic medal sport. In order that Korea wouldn't dominate the sport Koreans was limited to only 4 contestants out of the 8 weight classes. Kyong-Hun Kim was the first taekwondo Olympic heavyweight champion.
Another non team sport that is big in Korea is archery, of course you've table-tennis and badminton.
As far as team sports I'm not sure of the overall popularity breakdown , but based on a Korean roommate in college soccer and baseball are popular team sports.
Lastly short-track speed skating is a popular winter sport. It has a regular TV audience and the fans are very fanatical about their Korean skaters.
