If you mean that toenails can fall off, yes, they can. Ofte times the repeaded pounding your feet take happens when the shoe rubs against your toenail(s) for 26.2 miles, which often bruised the toe and causes your toenail to fall off. You can buy caps to put on your toes while your run, but I can imagine those might be just as uncomfortable as banging your toenail every step. My advise would be to make sure you buy the right type of running shoe, and go to an expert store where you can talk to other distance runners before purchasing a shoe.

What generally causes a runner to loose a toenail is the formation of a water or blood blister under the toenail. This causes the nail to loosen from the nail bed and eventually come off.
The main causes of blisters under the toenail are:
Shoes with insufficient room in the toe box
Toenails that are too long.
As a rule of "thumb" there should be a thumb's width of space between the end of your longest toe and the end of the shoe's toe box when you are standing.
Note 1: When you run downhill, your foot slides forward in your shoe making it more likely that your toes will hit the from of the shoe. Races with long downhill stretches are most likely to result in toenail damage.
Note 2: It can take as long as a year to grow back the nail on your big toe if you loose it.
